Pre - Pan American Meet
at Dinosaur
by Jim Yocom

Day 3 - Another clear morning. With light and variable winds, the task committee set the task from launch to the radio towers, to Massadona, to the goal at the Colorado/Utah border. Today I launched just before Carol, we were the last off launch as conditions were marginal. Most pilots were only getting 500 or so over launch before heading out to the towers. Finally, just before we launched a few pilots popped up to near cloudbase at 12,000 ft. I was able to climb above launch and start toward the towers. Carol had fixed her radio problem from the day before so we talked during the whole flight, helping each other find the best lift and to take the best lines. We made the towers start gate and followed a cloud street back to launch and to Monument road. Carol was lower at this point and although the cloud street continued along the hills on the north side of County Road 16, we chose to cut across to the south side of 16 since not reaching the next cloud would have meant a long walk out.

We found a thermal and 2 other pilots right over 16 East about a mile east of Monument and thermaled up to about 13,000 ft. Another long glide put us over the switchbacks scratching for lift. The other 2 pilots chose a different area to

Day 1 - The meet was scheduled to start on Saturday, but a constant drizzle and overcast skies lead to calling the day before we ever went up the hill. No one was disappointed about not having to drive the road to launch in the rain. It gets to be a horrible slippery mess! Jayne Crabb, my Hang 5 driver and I went to Vernal and saw Runaway Bride. I don't think I like Julia Roberts with black hair.

Day 2 - The morning dawned to bright blue skies typical of Dinosaur. Winds were forecast to be light and variable with cloudbase rather low. Clouds were below launch as competitors began to set up, but quickly dissipated. The task was called to launch, fly west to the radio towers at the end of
the ridge, then fly out to Jenson Bridge, then back east to Dinosaur, then west to goal at the Colorado/Utah border. There are 24 pilots entered, a small turnout, especially from the RMHGA, I am the only entrant! This does make the gaggles very manageable and gives a laid-back atmosphere, really a very pleasant meet so far. Carol Sperry is flying with Jayne and I, she
