New Swift site not okay with Boulder Open Space
There were several pilots who went out this weekend (October 26 &27) to fly a potential new site in North Boulder. While the idea of a drive-up site and 1000' agl on the front range sound good, the launch and landing areas are located on City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP).
I just recieved a call from OSMP today and they have specifically requested that we NOT fly this new site (Swift). As we discussed during our walk-thru for Dakota Ridge, any new potential sites must be worked through the club and OSMP as a cooperative effort.
Rangers will be patrolling this new site to help inform anyone wishing to fly there that is it not acceptable at this time. OSMP has said that they are not ready to walk-thru new sites until after their planning efforts are completed in the next couple of months.
The RMHGA Site Preservation Team and/or Club Officers will work with OSMP late in the first quarter of next year to schedule a walk-thru. If you are interested in joining the Team or becoming an Officer, please send me an e-mail.
It's good that new sites are being explored and I don't want to discourage that. We all need to be thinking about how we can open and preserve sites so we will have a place to fly tomorrow, next year, in ten years, in fifty years... However, we need to make certain that we are operating within landowner tolerances and OSMP is one of our most sensative areas. Your support in this matter is appreciated.
